FISH -LADDER
Large rivers are generally inhabited by several types of fish
, many of which are migratory, called Anadromous fish, move from one part of the
river to another part, according to the season.
Generally speaking for India, these Anadromous fish have
found to be moving from upstream (hills) to downstream (plans) at the beginning
of winter season in search of warmer waters, and return to their spawning
grounds upstream, slightly before monsoons, in the month of May to June. This
movement is essential for their survival . Due to the construction of weir or
barrage, this movement gets obstructed and is detrimental to the fishes.
A structure that enables the fish to pass upstream is called
a ‘Fish – Ladder ‘.For the free movement of fishes along the course of the
river, the fish ladder is essential. It this fish ladder, the baffle walls
are constructed in a zig-zag manner so that the velocity of flow within the
ladder does not exceed 3 m/sec.
