The canal head work may be two forms.

Storage Head Work

Diversion Head Work


When dam is constructed across a river valley to form a storage head work.
When a weir or barrage is constructed across a perennial river to raise the water level and to divert the water to the canal , then it is known as diversion head work.

Components parts of diversion head work :


1.       Weir or barrage
2.       Divide wall
3.       Scouring sluices or under sluices
4.       Fish ladder
5.       Canal head regulator
6.       Silt excluder
7.       Guide bank
8.       Marginal embankment or Dyke.

What are the difference between Barrage and Weir ?


BARRAGE

WEIR

·         Low set crest
·         High set crest.
·         Gates are of greater height.
·         Shutter are of smaller height , 2 m
·         Perfect control on river flow.
·         No control on river flow.
·         Longer constructed period.
·         Shorter construction period.
·         Road / rail bridge can be constructed at low cost.
·         Not possible to provide road rail bridge.
