Workability and Factors affecting of workability.

Before knowing the factors affecting workability, we need to know what is Workability?

I have seen many students and many fresher’s, they confuse between workability and Water-Cement Ratio.

So if you are one of them, then this article is perfect for you.

As a Civil Engineering student, you should have a clear concept about workability.

If you have no idea about workability, you will not be able to work at the construction site.

About 90% of interviews in construction companies, at least one question is asked on workability.

Moreover, if you want to understand mix design, then you must know the workability, otherwise, you will not be able to do mix design.

Let’s get started...

What is the workability of the fresh concrete?

What is the workability of the fresh concrete?

It is defined as the property of the concrete which determines easy and homogeneity, which can be mixed, placed, compacted, and finished. The quality of concrete satisfied the above requirement, which term as workable concrete. The word workability of concrete signifies much winder than the term consistency. Need not to be workability for a particular job. But every job required particular workability.

Factors of Workability:-

       I.            Water content
     II.            Mixed proportion
  III.            Size of aggregate
 IV.            Shape of aggregate
    V.            The surface texture of the aggregate
 VI.            Grinding of aggregate
VII.            Use of admixture.

Water Content:- Water content given volume of concrete will have a significant influence on workability. The higher water content per m3 of concrete, the higher will be the fluidity of concrete. Which is one of the important factors of workability?

Mix Proportional:- Aggregate – cement ratio is an important factor of workability. The higher the aggregate-cement ratio is the leaner in the concrete. The lean concrete less quantity of paste is available for providing lubrication per unit surface of aggregate and hence the mobility of aggregate any restrain.
Size of Aggregate:- The bigger the size of aggregate the less in surface area. Hence less amount of water is required for wetting, the surface and less matrix of paste are required for lubricating the surface to reduces internal friction. The shape of aggregate influences workability in good measure angular, elongated, or flaky aggregate makes the concrete very hard when compared to rounded aggregate or cubical shape aggregate. The better workability of concrete is rounded aggregate.

Surface Texture:- The surface texture on workability is again due to the fact that the total surface area of rough texture aggregate is more than the surface area of the smooth rounded aggregate of the same volume.

Grinding of Aggregate:- This is one of the factors which will have maximum influence on workability. A well-graded aggregate is the one, which has the least amount of void in a giver volume.

Use of Admixture:- The most important factor is this in which affects the workability. The plasticizer and super-plasticizer improve the workability of the concrete. One should manipulate other factors to often initial slump or 2-3 cm in reference mixed.
